Wi-Fi Technology

Jul 19, 2009 by

The Wireless technology of Wi-Fi establishes connection in the form of internet and between devices for data sharing through radio waves. Wi-Fi is supported by most of the desktops, notebook, smart phones, iPod, PSP and other peripherals. Wi-Fi is a long distance transportable technology which can be used by millions of people all over the world for individual and business purposes. The single carrier direct sequence spread spectrum radio technology and OFDM technologies are used by Wi-Fi to connect to more networks.

Wi-Fi

Advantages:

  • Nowadays WI-Fi is the talk of the town everywhere thanks to its wireless usage and easy usage. Also the user has the luxury of sitting at home or anywhere with his laptop and simply connect with many laptop companies now providing built-in Wi-Fi technology.
  • The wireless LAN’s now can be hosted in places where the user may find difficulty in finding suitable places to house wiring and stuff. Also this leads to reduced costs and more efficiency.
  • Wi-Fi is more global and is now universal as it works in all parts of the world without any hassles.
  • There is no need to worry about connectivity in Wi-Fi as it works everywhere, your lobby, university, hotel and the other merit is that it works undisturbed even when you keep moving from one access point to another, so it is hassle free for the user.
  • The availability of this service is also very good and the services are available with a basic level of service. Also features like WPA2 security and interoperability add to the merits and make it more popular.

Disadvantages:

  • Signal strengths play a key role in Wi-Fi networks. The users may have to check the signal strength at regular times to make sure that the connection is stable.
Wi-Fi signals are likely to be badly affected by climatic circumstances which reduce signal level.
  • The problem when VNP is not used, which is an encryption technique there is a possibility of the Wi-Fi network being monitored and it can be maliciously to read and copy data, even personal information about the user.
  • Lower throughput speeds and disruption of connections may be periodic phenomena in case of interoperability problems between brands and also due to deviations from the required standards in Wi-Fi connections. Only those devices passing the quality test are useful.

Hi a small tweak you guys can do to share internet via in built WI-FI device even if you have only one connection from your ISP which can wired or wireless.

One system to which the main internet line is connected acts as a server. All other systems act as clients. First, you have to enable ICS(internet connection sharing) on the server going to the particular connection setting. Then you have to create a ad-hoc network in your server system and preferably it should have a security key (WEP is highly secured). Then all other systems would log in to that ad-hoc network by providing the correct security key. one thing if on Vista/XP the computers get connected but in client machines you are not able to access internet then you have to manually assign IP address as follows:
    Server : 192.168.0.1
    Client: 192.168.0.2
    Client: 192.168.0.3 and so on….
    Default gateway : 192.168.0.1
subnet mask will be automatically assigned 255.255.255.0
if not assigned then manually assign

This is specially helpful for those people who have 2/3 laptops and are staying together and the connection provider prohibits use of switch/hub for sharing and has enabled only 1 bind (especially done by local cable internet ) then they can share the connection the only con side is if you have a low bandwidth connection it will be slow as the connection gets shared
