Large File Attachments

Jun 2, 2011 by

Sharing of all types of documents and files, including images and music files, for official and personal purposes is a ubiquitous and regular requirement over the internet. We have been sending files as attachments along with emails as a common practice. Other ways of sharing files, such as through chat or messenger, are now also being used. But at times, the files that need to be sent are extremely large due to which it becomes extremely difficult to send these large files via emails or messenger, thus causing the sender a lot of trouble. Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, RediffMail, AOL are some of the most commonly used email platforms over the years.

The Problems you face
There are a number of issues associated with sending attachments of large files by email including:

  • Time taken for the file to be attached is long causing internet slowdown
  • Each mailing system has its own size limit on attachments
  • Storage of such files in the email system itself will diminish the overall storage capacity
  • Emails are generally not the fastest media for sharing large data. They are primarily meant for light communication

Better Ways are Available
There are much more efficient and effective ways of sending or sharing large files reaching 100s of MBs or even GBs in size.

  1. A number of file sharing services or websites have come up that have been found to be extremely effective for this purpose. E.g. YouSendIt is an amazing way for a person to share large files with others and there is absolutely no need for the user to make an account to use the site. All a person is required to do is upload the site in order to send and share files with others. A regular email service might not provide the facility to send large file attachments but this site will surely enable one to do so. You can send files up to a given limit for free or can take up a subscription if you want to send even larger files.
  2. MegaUpload is another such service that is extremely famous among people who regularly find the need to share files with people for various purposes. The site allows sending files up to 500MB. Moreover, these files are stored by the site itself for a given period of time so that you can access them even after few days.

  3. DropSend comes in the form of a desktop utility through which you can send files as big as 2GB right from your computer. You need not even open a website for this purpose. The utility is available for both Windows and Mac. You can be sure of the security of your data as the files are sent over a 256bit AES security channel.

  4. TransferBigFiles.com is another site that can send files up to 1000MB. The site provides facilities to protect the files by letting the user have a password for the file which is quite useful at times.

  5. MailBigFile is a service provider that can send files up to 520MB to a single email receiver.

Thank you for the information. I know a website where you cab send also a large file and it is called Gigafile.com but sometimes when i try using it i am having a problem uploading just an 8G amount of file. I hope that our email providers would find way to have a features like this and would not limit us to send only a small amount of file.I will try to use some of the website you mentioned above and hopefully they are a lot faster. :)
