Benefits Of File Sharing & Cloud Computing

With technology seemingly improving and advancing at a quicker rate than ever before, we tend to hear a lot these days about the increasingly digitized nature of business. Large companies and small businesses alike are operating more and more online, with the result that company websites and online systems for businesses have become incredibly important. A business that runs smoothly in a digital environment is poised for success in its field.

Having successful online operations in a business also means being able to implement new technologies and practices as they become available, and for many businesses in recent years that has meant adapting to advanced file sharing and cloud storage. The ways in which businesses share files in large volume and address company work online have changed significantly. Here are a few words on some of the key benefits in productivity, security and efficiency that advanced file sharing and cloud storage offer.

Sending Large & Complex Files
Many businesses that deal with either a high volume of file sharing or particularly complex digital files (video presentations, lengthy documents, etc.) ultimately find that ordinary emailing services are inadequate and free file sharing services lack necessary security. For this reason, the ability to send large files with Share File or a similar advanced file sharing provider can be extremely useful for business efficiency and capability. With advanced file sharing services in place, these sorts of large and complex files can easily be transferred between co-workers, employees and clients all on a system that is easy to integrate into an existing website or online business platform. In fact, some file sharing providers even offer tools like desktop widgets for easy access and use, as well as org
anizational efficiency.

Securing & Tracking Files
With some advanced file sharing services, you also benefit from increased control over the security and tracking of your communications. From requiring passwords to open documents, to receiving automatic tracking and reports of your communications meeting their intended destinations, and even having control over your employees’ access to files, these security benefits can help any online business to run more smoothly. Without a firm grasp on communications, it can be difficult to feel assured that your work is running as smoothly as possible.

Utilizing Cloud Storage & Backup
Perhaps most importantly of all, advanced file sharing can also include access to a cloud computing network, which can completely change the ways in which you work and back up your progress. Essentially, what cloud computing allows you to do is access working files and documents on the cloud, rather than on a specific device. This means that you can then log in to the cloud from any device, anywhere, that is able to access the Internet, and continue and save your work. In addition to the clear benefit in convenience, this also improves your ability to collaborate and to back up files. Collaboration is quite simple when anyone with the correct password can access cloud computing. Meanwhile, files saved on the cloud are effectively backed up “off-site,” in that a malfunction in equipment will not result in the loss of important files.

Where Did Apple Maps Go Wrong?

The release of Apple maps had many hopeful – the iOS 6 version used vectors instead of rasters, for starters. The raster images in Google Maps ate up a lot of data, took a long time load and could not be cached for connection-less perusing of the maps service. People therefore had high expectations of Apple’s map service.

The research period
Apple began acquiring many smaller mapping companies in order to start building its mapping service. It began circa 2008, around the time Google launched Android. After negotiations with Google to produce an app for Apple’s iOS had hit the stumbling blocks, Apple officially announced it would be coming out with its maps in June 2012.

Introduction of Apple maps with iPhone 5
However, Apple maps frustrated hopeful iOS users almost from the day it emerged. There were very obvious faults with the map data (it could not correctly place Dublin airport, amongst other major landmarks).  There were multiple tales of users being led seriously astray after malfunctioning maps data led them miles and miles off course. Users were not shy about mocking the maps app across social media, and the mainstream news media loved the story.

Critical response
Apple’s response to the public mockery of its mapping system was to swiftly fire mapping departmental head Richard Williamson. Next, management conceded that it was urging mapping company TomTom to fix the faulty data. CEO Tim Cook then issued a rare public apology, assuring consumers that Apple were doing everything in their power to fix the mess.  Luckily for Apple, the maps mess up didn’t seem to impair sales of the iPhone 5 in any way, and stores found it no more difficult to sell ipad stock.

There is somewhat of a happy ending for Apple, then. Their mapping system is steadily improving, and it can currently provide what everyone wanted from the beginning: vector graphics and turn-by-turn navigation on the ground. We think that Apple will continue to make their product better in the future.

How a Targeted Attack Happens

computer-hacker-hand-in-glove-working-on-laptopIt’s every executive’s worst nightmare: The corporate network has been breached, and now sensitive data about your business — and your customers — is at risk. The problem is you aren’t sure how it happened. Your IT team developed a security protocol that included virus protection, firewalls, encryption and password protection, but the criminals still got through somehow. You want your business to make news, but not for this reason.

In today’s ultra-competitive business environment, targeted attacks — cyber-attacks that are specifically directed toward a particular person or business — have become commonplace. Criminals most likely don’t want the data for themselves but are acquiring the information for someone else or to sell to the highest bidder.

You might think you aren’t a target for a malicious criminal who wants your data, but studies show most businesses have been — or will be — the victim of a targeted attack at some point. Understanding how these attacks take place will help you develop an effective plan for combating them — and help prevent the lost time, money and reputation stemming from a serious data breach.

The Beginning

According to Trend Micro, social media play a significant role in the early stages of a targeted attack. Attackers begin their infiltration by using public sources like Facebook and LinkedIn to find information about possible targets. Using this information, the attacker can create a customized attack; for example, he might send an email containing malware using the name of a friend or associate, or using instant messaging or an invitation to play a game or download an app. The idea is to create an opening for the attacker to get into the company’s network.

Gaining Entry

Once the attacker determines the point of entry, the attacker sends the malware and waits for the victim to take the bait. In many cases, the attempt is unsuccessful, since many users are savvy or security protocols block the attack; however, not every attempt is unsuccessful — and the malicious software makes it through. Once it does, the hacker is then able to control the infected machines and acquire the information he’s looking for. In many cases, the attacker uses the infected machine to infect other machines in an attempt to gain additional access privileges and control.

Data Harvesting

Although the attacker might gain access using the credentials of a lower-level employee, he will effectively “climb the ladder” through the organization to reach valuable information. In some cases, the attack will deploy a discovery system that identifies the drives and servers containing the information being sought. For example, the hacker may be looking for customer records, or internal documents outlining strategic plans or proposals. Once the desired data is located, it’s usually copied to an internal ghost or staging server that encrypts the data so it can be moved to another off-site server — without the organization even realizing it’s happening. Although a targeted attack includes a number of steps, once a hacker has access to the company network, it doesn’t take long for the damage to be done; in fact, malware can spread throughout an entire organization in a matter of minutes, and sensitive data can be harvested within a few hours. There really isn’t any way to protect against attempted targeted attacks, but you can prevent your company from becoming a victim of an attack. For example:

  • Protect the entry points, particularly email. Using an email security solution will allow you to block known malicious addresses, and quarantine suspected harmful messages until they can be cleared or deleted.
  • Employ real-time threat-detection tools that allow your security team to identify potential threats and control access to the network.
  • Educate employees about the threat of targeted attacks and how they can avoid inadvertently creating a risk. Keep the staff up to date about new threats, and place controls on employee social media usage.

Protecting your business from a targeted attack requires more than just antivirus software and a policy against opening email attachments. A multi-faceted, complex and comprehensive security plan and adequate controls will keep your data and network safe, and keep your business from making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Why Won’t This Doc Open? Tips for Opening Files

You download an important document, but it doesn’t open. The file isn’t recognized by your computer, and you have no idea what program might do the job. Is the file corrupted? Is there something wrong with your computer? There are few computer errors as frustrating as those that happen when everything else seems to be working fine. Being unable to open files is one of them. But don’t panic! Follow these steps to get your file open:

1. Identify the File Type

The first step to figuring out why your computer won’t open the file is that you have to know what type of file you’re trying to open. There are image files (JPG, TIFF, GIF), audio files (MP3, WAV), video files (MOV, AVI, WMV), and document files (PDF, DOC, ODF, and ZIP). For argument’s sake, let’s say you’re trying to open a document file. The most common document files include:

PDF (Portable Document Format): This universally supported file type captures images better than many word processing programs. You need special readers to be able to open PDFs in most cases. Adobe is a popular choice; you can also open a PDF file with your internet browser.

DOC or DOCX: These file extensions signify Microsoft Word documents, with the DOCX file being exclusively associated with Microsoft Word 2007 and the versions that come after. Sometimes, even if you have Word, if you don’t have the precise version in which the document was produced, you won’t be able to open it without installing new tools. Mac’s OpenOffice program can open these files sometimes, but not always.

ODF (OpenDocument Format): The file extension for documents created on a Mac OpenOffice program. Windows computers may not be able to open these files.

ZIP or RAR: These files could actually contain documents, audio files, video files, images or more. They’re condensed versions of files that need to be unzipped before you can read the contents. Windows and Mac OSX both have built-in unzip programs that should appear when you click on a ZIP file.

2. Match the File Type with a Program

If you can identify the type of file you have, your next step is to see if you have a program installed that will open it. For example, you must have Microsoft Word, or in some cases OpenOffice, to open a Word DOC or DOCX program. If you cannot open a DOCX, you may need to install a backwards compatibility tool in your earlier version of Word. Whenever possible, identify the manufacturer of the software that will open your file—in this case, Microsoft—and head to the official website to find the compatibility pack for downloads.

3. Use a File Opener

If hunting down the source of a file is getting you nowhere, or you simply don’t want to waste time combing through a website to see if compatibility packs exist and can help you, use a file opener program to save you time and stress. A file opener allows for sometimes hundreds of file extensions and will open them for viewing and editing when possible even when your computer usually wouldn’t. Other benefits of these programs include:

No need to purchase countless individual software programs, especially when you’re just looking to open a single file and have no need to keep working with those programs.

Download documents, audio files, video files and image files with confidence, knowing you’ll be able to view them on your computer.

Fast, easy opening. Download and open the program, select the file and go.

You won’t have to spend any money to enjoy the benefits of these programs, either. There are a number of free file opener options online.

4. Check for File Corruption

If you’ve pinpointed the program the file was made to run in and you’ve even tested the file in a file opener to no avail, there’s a chance your file is corrupted. If so, re-download the file. You may have accidentally stopped the download before it was fully completed, or a power or internet connection hiccup while downloading could have caused a corruption. Be sure to delete the original download first so you don’t confuse it for the new one. If this doesn’t work, the source of the file could be corrupt, and you should contact the producer of the file if possible to see if they can fix the issue on their end.

What Can You Expect from Six Star Hotels?

For years we were familiar with the traditional five-star hotel ratings system as a measure of luxury. However, the advent of a handful of super-decadent hotels has meant that a little stretching is needed, and now if you happen to have a few thousand pounds kicking around (often per night, I might add), you can join the elite group of six star hotel guests.

So what kind of services and amenities would you be able to expect from a six star hotel? Personal service is one of the top selling points of high rated hotels, and you would encounter a high staff-to-guests ratio. Some even offer you a personal butler or car service, and unlimited food and drink on demand.

Privacy is also a big part of the six-star service, and most hotels will offer private facilities such as personal outdoor bathrooms, Jacuzzis and private pools. Private dining is also a regular feature of six-star luxury, and large hotels will generally offer a choice of restaurants with private dining rooms for guests to use.

Good technology is essential in any six star hotel, and a good Wi-Fi coverage is the least you should expect. Hotel TV systems are now more advanced than ever, offering a range of personalisation options such as ordering wake up calls and accessing the internet or gaming facilities from your bed. A good download speed and bandwidth is also important, as this will allow you to stream movies and information easily if you choose to use your laptop or the TV’s inbuilt internet system.

Essentially, six star hotels are about luxury and convenience. A holiday should allow you to put your feet up and be looked after, and high-end hotels anticipate your every need. Whether you need to send emails, find a private car, or stick to a specific diet, your needs should be met quickly and without difficulty. On a lesser starred break you may be expected to organise things for yourself – booking cars and decoding menus is hardly relaxing! Six-star hotels are dedicated to you and your needs; start saving for your trip today!

It’s become expected for Apple’s product to sell out the first day however this new launch is becoming talked about as one of the biggest ever. Apple has reportedly received over 2 million orders in the first 24 hours.

It also comes with a larger screen and widescreen capability. Marry this to the new much-trumpeted 4G data speeds and you have the perfect tool for streaming video on the go.

All the indicators say that the iPhone is sure to be a success. We want to know if you’re one of those waiting to receive your shiny new device. Which plan are you going with, and which new features have persuaded you to upgrade from your previous phone?

How to Boost Your iPhone Signal

Mobile technology has developed at an astonishing rate over the last 10 years or so. Phones now feature high-spec cameras, web browsers and an abundance of apps as standard. They are more powerful than ever before; every technical element of the phone has developed exponentially…

That is of course, apart from your signal. Signals are largely dependent on your location, i.e. how close you are to your network providers’ telephone mast. But one element that people often forget about when wondering why they are lacking a signal is their phone case.

Your Phone Case Could be Damaging Your Signal

iPhone’s, as an example, are extremely costly. They are designed with a wonderful glass exterior, which looks great… but it’s not exactly shock proof. If you haven’t done it yourself, I’m sure you’ll have a friend that has managed to drop their iPhone in one way or another, and has shattered their screen wonderfully. Obviously therefore, it is of paramount importance that you have a case to protect your prized possession, to at least give it a fighting chance in case of a ‘drop’.

The iPhone phone case market is massive – seriously huge. Most cases are intent with coming up with a cool, funky design that makes your iPhone look quirky and interesting. However these cases are naïve to the harm they are doing to your phone signal – often covering your interior antennae, which picks up the signal, making your phone work harder (whilst diminishing your battery) for poor signal results.

A Signal-Boosting iPhone Cases

A phone case has though been developed though by Pong Research, who have managed to create a case that improves signal strength by up to 46% by creating efficient antenna performance which also increases talk-time battery life.

These impressive cases from Pong aren’t ugly either, they feature a sleek, minimalist design that suits the iPhone down to the ground, whilst also protecting your iPhone from any dangerous drops that may occur. As well as this, these Pong cases also reduce radiation exposure from the iPhone by up to 91%. You can find out more about Anti-Radiation iPhone cases by Pong here.

How does the Capacitive Stylus Work?

Styluses are by no means a modern invention and have been around for many millennia, ever since the Romans first combined styluses and tablets. The difference between 21st century tablets and styluses are, admittedly considerably different to the wax tablets used by the Romans though , with which styluses were used to engrave messages into them.

Tablets nowadays consist of several more chips, gigabytes and pixels than their Roman counterparts. Whilst styluses are no longer an ‘essential’ tool when using tablets, they are still the tool of choice for many tablet users, particularly those who like to draw or make hand-written notes.
